Our digital lives
I disabled my Facebook account over a year ago and have never looked back. Very recently, I also disabled my Instagram and Twitter accounts. I don't know how this will affect me since the change has been so recent. The effects of social media have consistently been negative and the research seems to support this.* Use of such media is associated with greater levels of anxiety, negative emotions and depression symptoms. So, I don't see the changes I am making as being negative.
But at the same time, I do feel more isolated and cut off from the world. Genuine, close, and consistent human connection is so rare (especially among men) these days and not having social media as a crutch to lean on as a crappy imitation of sorts can potentially take its toll. I don't know how this is all going to turn out. Maybe I can turn my lack of social life around and form new close connections. But, I don't have much hope of that happening.
